Julia Silvestri, Graduate Student, Smith College

Julia grew up in Connecticut, where she attended public schools with a program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Her mother, older sister and younger brother are also Deaf, and her father is hearing. Julia had exposure to Deaf culture, ASL and spoken English. She is appreciative of her experience and supportive of linguistic diversity in education.

She attended Northeastern University in Boston, MA and earned a B.A. with a major in English and a minor in Theatre. After graduating, she worked at The Learning Center for Deaf Children (TLC), in the Walden School. Julia was a residential counselor in the dorm for two years, also helping in the after school drama program.
While at Northeastern, she took Deaf studies courses through the ASL program and became interested in the field of Deaf education. Currently, she is working part-time in the dorms at TLC and Clarke School, and studying for her Masters degree at Smith College in Northampton, MA. Julia hopes to continue work that promotes Deaf awareness and empowerment.
