7. Apply understanding of theory, philosophy and models of practice to the education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
a. Comprehensive
'97 e.g., (1) Ability to organize, plan, and teach specific lessons in required curriculum areas using appropriate communication form(s). (2)
Ability to utilize innovative teaching techniques effectively and appropriately in the various content areas.
Innovative techniques include (a) Inquiry discovery techniques, (b) Individualized, small group, and large group
instruction, (c) Learning centers, (d) Uses of media and audio visual materials, (e) Uses of computer technology
to assist instruction, (f) Instructional analyses, (g) Team teaching and cross-age grouping. (3) Ability to identify and
utilize available community resources in and outside the classroom.
b. Bilingual-Bicultural
'97 e.g., (1) Develop teaching strategies appropriate to distinct learning styles and developmental levels of children. (2) Know how culture affects students' learning styles. (3) Develop abilities to organize, plan, and teach specific lessons in required curriculum areas using the appropriate terminology in ASL and English. (4) Develop a knowledge base and teaching strategies related the basic elements and methodologies best suited to the development of literacy, mathematics, social studies, science, art, music, and physical education. (5) Develop and ability to utilize innovative teaching techniques effectively and appropriately in the various content areas and in two languages. Innovative techniques include (a) Inquiry discovery, (b) Individualized, small group, and large group instruction, (c) Learning centers, (d) Uses of media and audio visual materials, (e) Uses of computer technology to assist instruction, (f) Instructional analyses, (g) Team teaching and cross-age grouping. (6) Develop an awareness of the way in which a learner's culture should permeate all areas of the curriculum, including career/vocational education. (7) Develop a knowledge of effective classroom management strategies. (8) Develop an ability to work effectively with paraprofessionals. (9) Develop an ability to identify and utilize available community resources in and outside the classroom. (10) Develop a knowledge of research-supported instructional strategies and practices for teaching Deaf children.
c. Oral/Aural
