My First Dictionary by Betty Root

Jan Dent- Kent State University- Deaf Education Portfolio Topic

Key Words: Curriculum Materials, K-12, Literacy

Description

This dictionary is a picture dictionary which provides photographs of the words included so it can be used with older students without them feeling "babied." The most significant part of this dictionary however is the inclusion of the alphabet on top of each page. It has a marker pointing to where the letter you are currently looking at is located and can give students a better idea of directionality they need to find the word they want.

Why It Works

This provides deaf students the visual they need since they generally do not have the alphabet song in their heads the way hearing people do well into college days and past. The marker says where they are and they can then look and see where they need to go from there.
