A journal is a good material to use with deaf students. My practicum teacher uses journals (news books) on a daily basis. Every morning the students get in a circle with the teacher and every student tells their "news". In a notebook the students can either write a paragraph about what they did the day before or they can draw a picture about their day. The journal works good because it enables the students to express themselves and it provides them with daily practice of writing and communication skills.
