Novel units are units based upon children's literature and serve as a way of helping to start the whole language method in the classroom if you are use to basals. They are booklets which help the teacher by providing initial ideas for integrated subject activities, comprehension questions, and bulletin boards.

Why It Works

This works depending on how you use them. It is intended as a starting place, not the cookbook method of many basals. It starts teachers thinking and gives them a jumping off point to begin to use some whole language concepts in their classroom. It gives a summary of the story, ideas for pre-reading activities, story mapping, character webbing, and provides reproduction rights for limited use in individual classrooms of the teachers who purchased the booklet.
