Unit 6--Accessing Services

Upon the completion of this unit, the participants will:

  • Know rights of access to health and social services
  • Identify various health and social service resources

Persons with disabilities often have difficulty identifying and accessing needed health and social services. This difficulty may be even greater for those with hearing losses, due to communication problems. Fortunately, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (section 504) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provide many protections. However, participants will need to recognize their rights under these laws and how to use those rights to their advantage. Further, they must learn how to use various insurance and welfare programs. In this unit, participants will become aware of their rights under the ADA as it relates to health services, strategies for utilizing those rights, and information regarding health care providers and methods of payment.
