Unit 5--Substance Use and Abuse

Upon completion of this unit, the learner will:

  • Recognize the symptoms, and consequences of abusing selected substances (tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, heroin)
  • Apply avoidance strategies when necessary

    Among the most serious problems in this nation are those related to substance abuse. Some persons are more vulnerable to the possibility of becoming substance abusers, including those with disabilities and those living in the inner city environments. In this unit, learners will be exposed to types of substances commonly abused, signs of abuse or addiction, and how to avoid situations in which abuse may occur or begin. Ideas for obtaining help are included.
