1994 Conference To Be at
South Padre Island
As you read this, plans are underway for the 1994 ACE-DHH
Conference. The conference will be at South Padre Island, Texas,
about an hour's drive from the airport at Brownsville. Local
Arrangements Chair Al White, of Texas Women's University, is
working on locating a hotel that will meet our needs. Once that is done,
a specific date can be set for the conference. The dates and hotel,
along with other specifics, will be announced in the Fall newsletter.
President-Elect Paul Crutchfield, of Flagler College, will be the program
chair. He would like your input as he begins planning the program. A
questionnaire for this purpose is included in the newsletter. Please fill it
out and mail it to Paul, whose address is on the form.
At the 1992 conference the Executive
Board changed to membership year to coincide
with the calendar year. Accordingly, the books
are now "closed" for the 1993 membership year.
The Fall newsletter will include an application
form for the 1994 membership year for both new
and continuing members. Please do not renew
your membership before that time.
Ad Hoc Constitution/
At the 1993 conference Shirin Antia,
Larry Fleischer, and Sally Holt volunteered to
serve on an ad hoc committee to continue
working on revision of the ACE-DHH constitution
and by-laws. Additional volunteers are needed.
Please contact Marilyn Sass-Lehrer if you are
interested. (Her address and telephone number are
elsewhere in this newsletter.)
The CEASD Committee on Ethnic and
Multicultural Concerns has established a $1,000
scholarship to be awarded to an ethnic,
multicultural minority graduate students enrolled in
an approved program in deaf education for the
coming academic year. Applications should be
requested from Dr. Oscar P. Cohen,
Superintendent, Lexington School for the Deaf,
30th Avenue and 75th St., Jackson Heights, NY
11370. The completed application forms should
be sent to Dr. Kathee Christensen, Department of
Communicative Disorders, San Diego State
University, San Diego, CA 92182-0151.
Harold Johnson is now the person
responsible for CED program approval.
Questions regarding this process should be
directed to Harold at Kent State University, 401
White Hall, Kent, OH 44242.
After the 1993 conference, the ACE-DHH
Executive Board realized that the language of the
CED standard approved at the business meeting
was not the exact wording approved by CED.
(See minutes, page 6.) Subsequently, a quorum
of the Board moved editing the wording to
correspond with the actual CED language by
deleting the concluding phrase "under 1.2.4a for
bilingual/bicultural ASL programs."
