  • Well what do you know...joy of being itinerant...the address for HIP magazine was in my car, not in my office.:-)

    HiP Magazine
    1563 Solano Ave., #137
    Berkeley, CA
    94707

published 6 times a year...aimed at 6-13ish...but my 15 year old still likes it.

Subscription prices (in US I assume (I dont remember what I paid in Cdn $))
    14.95 for a single subscription
    12.95 each for 2-5 subs.
    10.95 each for 6-15 subs
8.95 each for more than 16

Oh, here it says "Cnd sub. add $4.00 US funds" ..you'll have to ask about Aussie ones I found them really good about sending free ones to students so they could check it out.

    Good Luck

  • Hi! This is Cathy Carroll, Editor of World Around You, magazine for deaf & hard of hearing students. Marilyn Galloway, my boss here in Pre-College Programs Gallaudet & member of EduDeaf, asked me to tell you about our publication.

World Around You is published 5 times a year. Our readers are primarily deaf teens. We cover news & information about deaf people & the deaf community. Especially important--hero adventure stories, where deaf kids or adults are the hero or adventurer. For example, this month our big story is about the two deaf men in N.J. who pulled a man and woman out of their burning car after it crashed.

Each issue also has a page of student work (send it!), short news items, sports, a math muse, question of the month to which student readers are invited to respond, a science column by author Harry Lang (did you know that 6 craters on the moon were named after deaf people? Read Harry in our December issue!), and SUPERDEAF, a super comic strip about a deaf hero and her interpreter ("Ultra'terp").

We also have a yearly pen pal issue, which lists pen pal seekers (primarily deaf teens) from around the world. World Around You-Pen Pal is always published in November--our next issue!

And one more thing--our yearly student contest. Usually it is focused on writing, but this year World Around You & Pre College Programs are getting together with Gallaudet's School of Education and Human Services to sponsor a photography contest. The theme of the contest is: "Deaf Students in Their Own Eyes." We want photos of deaf students at school, work, and play. Bill McCrone, Dean of Gallaudet's SEHS, plans to hang the photos in Gallaudet's historic Fowler Hall. The winning photographer & chaperone will be invited to Gallaudet to stay in our new Conference Center, visit the campus, and enjoy a reception.

World Around You is not free. Subscribers defray the costs of printing and mailing. Single subscriptions cost $10 ($15 for those living outside of the U.S.). People who order 10 or more subscriptions (presumably to accommodate a class of students) and have them mailed to the same address pay $7 per subcription. Even better discount ($5) available for those ordering 30 or more mailed to the same address (presumably for school).

For more information about any of this, pls feel free to call, write, fax, or e-mail:
    1-800-526-9105 (toll free in U.S.)
