Hello all:

Long time lurker, part-time poster here. I've a question for all educators and parents of HI students.

In my experience with HI students I've always felt there was some other factor involved with a few of my students interfering with their learning process. I'm currently taking a summer class in Learning Disabilities and I feel this may be part of what I was seeing with a few of the students. My question is this:

As an educator what is your knowledge concerning LD and do you feel your HI students may have LD along with their HI?

We've been in class for one week and already I'm seeing that some reading and learning methods used for LD could also cross over to HI students (like methods for HI students can cross over to Hearing students).

Hi Dan,

I've been working with deaf kids for awhile now and every year I have at least 2 or more students that I can safely classified as LD/HI. Part of the reason for this is the child's etiology, when we know it, of low birth weight, prematurity, lack of prenatal care....exposure to CMV, etc.....

I try to look at each student as a unique learner. It's my responsibility to figure out what's the student's best modality for learning and then teach to the child. The real problem occurs when you have a hard of hearing child who has alot of hearing but auditory processing problems!

Yes, many techniques cross over from field to field within the parameters of special education. That's the "I" in Individual Education Plan.....teaching/educating for the Individual, not necessarily the masses.

The problem with the label LD/HI is that it sometimes is misused and becomes a catch-all for kids of having problems learning, but no on really knows what those problems are or why. If I work with a child who is not really "LD" I'll call them a student with learning problems not attributable to hearing loss/deafness alone.

Hope I haven't muddied the waters too much....

As a parent, I have personal experience with LD and HI. My child was language delayed because of oral motor issues in addition to hearing impairment. He also had autistic tendencies, which inhibited language development. He used to be hyperactive with ADD. Until his latest psychological there was still a question of mild ADD, though it only seems to come about when he is on antibiotics, so we're certain its biochemically induced. We do see ADD symptoms when Alex takes antibiotics...it's like a different child!

I have researched this extensively, and have found that this is the reason that you need a psychologist who is an expert in assessing HI children to do the psychological assessments. They need to be able to discriminate between which learning issues are a result of hearing vs a result of other learning disabilities. Alex just had his first official school psychological by a psychologist with experience at Gallaudet and was found to currently have no educational issues other than his speech disfluency (stuttering) which were not related to his HI.
