Key Words: Curriculum Materials, K-12, General Information
Type: Comprehensive Guide and Activities Catalog
Focus: Alternative Curriculum
Barbara Wilcox and G. Thomas Bellamy and a number of contributing authors developed The Activities Catalog and a comprehensive guide to accompany it.
The guide is "an introduction to The Activities Catalog and a guide to the total curriculum system that is built around the catalog. The book describes the problems inherent in traditional approaches to curriculum for individuals labeled moderately and severely handicapped, outlines a comprehensive alternative, and details procedures for using The Activities Catalog in high school, work, and residential settings." (p. xi)
"The Activities Catalog is an alternative curriculum for any adolescent or adult whose progress in existing programs is so slow or irregular that competent daily performance seems unlikely to result in the time available." (p. xi) It is "essentially a catalog of life's activities. No emotions, thoughts, or feelings, but the day-to- day events that keep us busy, healthy, and happy. The Activities Catalog displays: 1) the myriad of ways we might constructively use free time, 2) all those things that we might do to care for ourselves and contribute to our household, and 3) the various kinds of work we might do to earn wages and contribute to the community." (p. 4)
It is, "quite literally, a catalog that organizes potential training objectives for persons with severe disabilities. It is designed to assist parents, teachers, service providers, and individuals with disabilities make thoughtful decisions about how to invest training time." (p. xi)
