    Language Syllabus Team- Susan Easterbrooks

The Language Syllabus Team met again via technology in a designated chat
room provided by Georgia State University. The team is developing a matrix
aligning CED Standards with performance indicators and appropriate
technology. The team is also designing a menu of student projects that
address the indicators and suggest technology applications. The process is
proceeding well, and the team looks forward to feedback and input from
ACE-DHH in New Orleans.

    11/15/99

    Language - Susan Easterbrooks

The team met and discussed several issues including the definition of
technology, what constitutes a language course, and how this should tie to
standards. Next meeting is December 2.

    11/18/99

    Oral Communication - Dee Klein

Each member will send me their list of 'essential
topics' for our syllabi and it will be typed and
disbursed by Nov. 30 so that we can come to a
concensus regarding what we feel is essential for
inclusion.

    Curriculum - Larry Hawkins

I have requested copies of syllabi for the elem. methods course(s) and have
received about six or seven from around the country. I wanted to get an
idea of the types of things people were covering in those classes. I have
made copies of those syllabi and will be mailing them out to my team
members to view. Next I believe we need to ask the same kinds of questions
that Susan's (Easterbrook) team asked. One we decide on the content, we can
design a way to present it on the web.

    11/04/99

    Dee Klein, Oral Communication:

Dee and her team have divided the country into segments and each member of
the team is acquiring syllabi from programs in their segment. Dee will also ask for
suggestions via the listserv The current goal is for each person to review
their collected syllabi and note common features as well as outstanding
individual features.

    10/29199

Syllabi teams are in the initial stages of organizing, determining their
procedures, and gathering ideas from colleagues.

The Language Syllabus Team, led by Susan Easterbrooks, will have their
first meeting via a Chat Room on November 4.

Their stated challenges are:

  1. 1. To determine what technology will allow us to teach our language courses
  2. more efficiently.
  3. 2. To determine what technology will allow our student teachers to teach
  4. language more efficiently.
  5. 3. To determine what technology will allow deaf students to learn language
  6. more efficiently.
  7. 4. To do this in a manner sensitive to both the English language and
  8. American Sign Language.
    10/14/99

Katharine Slemenda has accepted the position of "Goal Leader" for the grant's syllabi development work.   The curricular expertise and organizational skills that Katharine brings to effort make her the perfect person for this position.  As you know, Katharine is on the faculty of Converse College.  She can be reached via one of the following numbers/addresses:

Objectives:

"Syllabi Development Teams" will be established for language, literacy, curriculum and communication [both spoken & signed]) method courses. Each team will be composed of 3-4 D/HH Education faculty members who have expressed a particular interest in a particular method course. Each team will identify, describe and share the essential problems, objectives, resources, instructional strategies, instructional activities, assessment protocols and products that their method course will address/incorporate. Each team will incorporate the use of Internet linked, computer based technologies into the components of their syllabi (e.g., Web sites, Cyber Mentors, Curriculum Development, K-12 Instructional Portfolios, Multi-Media Case Studies, etc.). Each team will identify the specific technology hardware, software and skills that faculty will need to effectively use their syllabi. Each team will share the results of their work at the 2000 ACE-D/HH conference and on the CED Web site.

Outcomes:

Five technology enhanced, D/HH Education method course syllabi will be developed and shared. Each syllabi will identify how Internet linked, computer based technologies and resources can be used to enhance instruction and improve learning. Each syllabi will identify the specific hardware, software and technology skills that will be needed by the faculty and students who use them.
