Teen Web Sites

The following sites contain information for teenagers and young adults. All three sites provide both educational and entertainment information. Educational links include homework help, literature searches, and writing centers. Entertainment links include biographies on your favorite actor/actress, movie and music reviews, on-line interactive games, sports, and news. I have focused on the strength of each site based on in its presentation of either educational or entertainment c haracteristics.

Name Your mining Co. Guide to Teen Exchange

This site also offers information on creative writing (including literature, short stories, and poetry.) You will find the Writing Center is designed to help improve overall style & presentation of reports. The Writing Center addresses issues such as general writing concerns, writing for job searches, professional writing, parts of speech, spelling, and sentence construction. To locate the Writing Center first click More Links on the home page, then click Creative Writing, and finally, click on Writing Center.
Reason for Selection

Teen Exchange appears to offer a variety of topics for interested teenagers. Because adolescents have such a wide range of interests, it is important to select sites that are diverse in their presentation of topics. I also found the Writing Center to be of particular interest. I believe this link can help middle and high school deaf students who have specific questions regarding their writing style.
Possible Use

Middle and high school aged students can visit the Writing Center for help with composition style and presentation. Students can investigate writing topics such as topic brainstorming, outlining, proofreading strategies, constructing fluent paragraphs, and selection of appropriate language.
NameMulticultural Pavilion
URLhttp://curry.edschool.virginia.edu/go/multicultural/
Description

This site is designed to provide information to individuals on issues such as ethnicity, culture, language, gender, multicultural awareness, minority resources, sexual orientation, and multicultural organizations. Multicultural Pavilion also contains a growing number of Internet resources related to books for Children & Young Adults.
Reason for Selection

Finding interesting sites for young adults is a difficult task. Students at this age have a wide range of interests and experiences. For deaf students, perhaps, this range is even greater. This site does not have to serve only academic purposes. Students can explore topics of their personal interest. I felt that in selecting this site, I would be giving deaf students a functional reason for reading. Specific information presented in this site is not necessarily covered in school, but students can enhance their reading skills, develop further vocabulary, and learn at the same time.
Possible Use

Students interested in culture, language, ethnicity . . . etc. can come to this site for further information. Perhaps a student has French ancestors and would like to learn more about French culture. The student can visit Multicultural Pavilion for related web sites and resources. Maybe a student is writing a history paper on the Holocaust. This student can find factual information regarding the Holocaust to use in their paper. This site gives deaf students a resource for information that perhaps they would not necessarily receive at home or in the classroom. Teachers may refer this site to their students as they begin to express interests beyond the school curriculum.
NameOH Kids! WebTeens
URL http://www.oplin.lib.oh.us/EDUCATE/WEBTEENS/
Description

WebTeens is a site that offers information on career planning, guides to specific careers, and college options. This site also contains entertainment links to movies, sports, music, on-line interactive games, and books. Located on the Home Page (OH! Kinds Page) is a Subject Index. Click on this icon for help with homework in art, reading & writing, math, science, government, and social studies.
Reason for Selection

One reason I chose this site is because it is both academic and entertainment oriented. This site is also devoted to the interests and needs of teens. A student need not be involved in academic computer work to learn. In fact, a student can come to this site and read for hours about their favorite sports team or movie actress. In doing so, students are engaging themselves in voluntary, meaningful reading, something which deaf students may be less likely to do.
Possible Use

I highly recommend this site as a college/career information reference. Use Teachers can refer their students to this site for helpful information regarding career planning, specific professions, independent living, and college selection. Students may also find personal interest in this site. Perhaps students will become engrossed for hours reading about an entertainment topic of personal interest. This site also contains an excellent homework help link. By clicking the Subject Index icon, students may investigate specific homework problems in art, literacy, math & science, Ohio government and social studies.
