Cochlear Implants
By: Dawn Powell

This web site was created to help parents and early interventionists who are working with children who have cochlear implants. Most families have a number of questions about not only the implant itself, but also the effects it will have on their child’s learning. My intention is to help those involved with these children to make informed decisions regarding the education of children by making the best use of their implant.

This web site is organized into a series of questions regarding cochlear implants that parents and professionals might ask. For each question I have included not only answers and resources but also my personal insights.

  1. What is a cochlear implant and how does it work?
  2. How much can a person hear after an implant?
  3. How can I best facilitate a child with a cochlear implant?
  4. Should sign language be used with the cochlear implant?
  5. What are the advantages/disadvantages of a mainstream placement for a child with a cochlear implant?
  6. What will happen to the child when he enters school?
  7. How do children with cochlear implants perform compared to their hearing peers?
  8. Information about the seminar through which this portfolio was created.
