My Deaf daughter is part of an interesting project in the Portland, OR Metro area. A preschool/kindergarten which has only hearing students at this time and all hearing teachers/staff has been bilingual since its' start. All staff and children are expected to use ASL as well as English. My daughter is their first Deaf employee and she will be working with them and the students to make sure they are actually using ASL. Next fall they plan to start admitting deaf preschoolers into this school where all the hearing students are already using sign language.

My hearing granddaughter (3 years old) will also be a student in this school. She has been raised in a bilingual/bicultural home so this is a nice continuation for her rather than being removed from that environment during the school day.

It will be interesting to see how this progresses as deaf children are introduced into this program!
