Deaf Empowerment Alliance Foundation (D.E.A.F., Inc.) is a private Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HOH) non-profit organization. It was founded in 1995 by Alice M. Dionisio, L.C.S.W., a Deaf Licensed Clinical Social Worker with the assistance of the Jersey City Deaf minority communities. It was first established in Hudson County area to meet the needs of Deaf and HOH people in the tri-state area.

The philosophy behind the organization is to empower Deaf and HOH people so that they may live independent lives, make intelligent choices and determine their own future. D.E.A.F., Inc. provides services such as:

Counseling - to assist Deaf/HOH people in managing their everyday lives in relationships, jobs and community living.

Education - to inform Deaf/HOH people of their rights as American citizens. To enable these populations through education, workshops, lectures and outreach programs so that they may gain their rightful places in society. To break down barriers of communications and ignorance.

Deaf Heritage - to inspire Deaf people to learn about Deaf culture and language thereby cultivating a strong and proud identity.

Advocacy - to advocate for the rights of Deaf/HOH people so they may gain equal access to services and opportunities within their communities.

Support - to offer support and assistance in time of need. To lend a hand when all else fails. D.E.A.F., Inc., is there to answer your questions.

Referrals - to assist Deaf/HOH people in finding the right service to fit their particular needs.

Interpreter Services - to meet the need of facilitating communication between Deaf and hearing people.
