The teacher in my school that works with the 5th grade students had a really interesting experience today having to interpret for a speaker on the topic of sexuality/reproduction. She asked if I would make this post for her.

Several of the words she knew would be discussed were not in our sign dictionaries. Does anyone know of a good sign book that has signs for female/male anatomy and other words related to reproduction or hygiene? I have the Advanced book of Signing Exact English (pink covered spiral book that can be ordered from Harris Communications) and that helped some but does not get as specific as the presentation she was interpreting for did.

Any resources mentioned would be a great help. Thank you.

We have found "Signs of Sexual Behavior" by Woodward, an excellent resource. Don't have publisher or cost right now, but I have seen it advertised in Harris Communications and Gallaudet Bookstore catalogs. If I remember correctly, it ran between $10.00 to $20.00... I especially like the sensitivity to regional signs. Most entries show several alternatives, and even lets you know what may be considered vulgar in some deaf communities.

He also compiled a similar book on drug abuse.

I would also urge you to contact deaf adults in your area. Who better to give you such "adult" information? We too often overlook this very valuable resource right in our own community, just a tty call away, and very possibly --free!

Virtually,
Karlene
