5-Month-Old Activities

Where's Baby?

Hold a washcloth above baby's face and ask "Where's (baby's name)?" Quickly remove the washcloth and happily exclaim "There's (baby's name)!" Give baby a kiss. Repeat the activity as long as baby seems interested.

Puppet Talk

Make a hand puppet out of an old sock. Securely sew yarn and felt scraps for facial features. Use the puppet to talk to baby. Change your voice to make it more interesting.

Both Hands

Encourage baby to use both hands. Prop baby into a sitting position. Hold up a toy and tell baby to take it. After he or she has grasped it, hold it up again and encourage baby to use the other hand to get the toy.

Tug of War

Tie an elastic band around an empty spool. Hold the elastic end and dangle the spool within baby's reach. Encourage baby to grab the spool. Gently pull on the elastic to create some resistance on the spool. Baby will respond by pulling on the spool. Praise baby's efforts.

Sing, Sing, Sing

The more you talk and sing to baby, the easier it is for him or her to learn to speak. Sing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" to your baby.
    Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star
    Twinkle, twinkle, little star.
    How I wonder what you are.
    Up above the world so high,
    Like a diamond in the sky.
    Tw inkle, twinkle, little star,
    How I wonder what you are.
