Prior to the 1970’s, the focus was on the child’s knowledge and use of syntax and word types (e.g., nouns, verbs, adjectives) (Schow & Nerbonne, 1996).
Misdiagnosis and mislabeling of deaf children lead to misconceptions of development (Paul & Jackson, 1993).
They were given the cruel label of “deaf & dumb”. They were institutionalized and considered inferior.
