Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center at Gallaudet

SUMMARY
The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center at Gallaudet University,
which includes the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) and the
Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD), is mandated by Congress to
improve the education of deaf and hard of hearing students nationwide.
The Dean will provide the leadership necessary to achieve the national
mission mandates as described in the Education of the Deaf Act Amendments
of 1998. The Dean serves as the chief academic and student life officer
and provides overall leadership and direction to the Model Secondary School
for the Deaf, Kendall Demonstration Elementary School, and the evaluation,
training, information systems and dissemination units within the Center.
QUALIFICATIONS

Earned doctorate and increasingly responsible leadership and supervisory
experience which demonstrates the ability to effect change and maintain
a climate of innovation, to fulfill the national mission, and to provide
an exemplary education to elementary and secondary youth. (A Master’s
degree and extensive related experience may be substituted for the doctorate.)

Expertise in educational development and in planning and utilization of
educational research and program evaluation.

Thorough knowledge of deafness and of the unique educational needs of deaf
youth.

Demonstrated understanding of diversity issues.

Excellent writing, communication and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively using American Sign Language
is required.

Willingness to reside on campus in order to be available as needed in the
residence halls and to respond to emergency situations.

Evidence of effective use of technology in elementary and secondary education
to promote learning or strong commitment to rapidly acquire such knowledge
and skill.

Demonstrated commitment to the effective education of deaf and hard of
hearing students from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic plans and complex
projects.

Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations related to the education of
and research involving deaf and hard of hearing students.

Demonstrated expertise in budgeting and resource allocation to achieve
strategic objectives.
