Conference call 01/11/01

Participants:  Karen Dilka, Michelle Hoversten, Donna Mertens

Absent:  Harold Johnson (collaborative work-Andros Island)

Final Report-Capacity Grant – Karen was unable to print the report when she submitted it in December.  She will have her student type it up from Karen’s handwritten copy and will fax/copy it to each of us.  Karen reports that submitting the form was easier then she thought and they did allow for going back and correcting pages.  Problem identified:  all involved need to be able to watch the data from individual programs accumulate and see what others are submitting.

Choices/Faculty

-  While in Denver, Karen contacted John Luckner.  John preferred not to meet with Karen; he felt he could look up the information himself.  Karen informed John that projects did not have to be high tech – they just had to increase a skill.

-  Donna needs a full listing of faculty, by region, institutions, contact information, Choices chosen and their titles.  She will visit places that have approved Choices.   Donna may follow up with some faculty who haven’t submitted Choices to get feedback.  Donna suggests that it would be to see if there are areas in which faculty are struggling with which we can help.

-  On-line Cyber Mentor application form is approved and is to be posted to the web and all organizations notified.

Meetings/Conferences

National Agenda – first meeting held last week in Phoenix.  A National Agenda, similar to that for the blind, is being proposed; focus to be on education.  Outcome of meeting was very positive.  Technology is an emphasis – it is one of the 8 or 9 “statements” which resulted from the Phoenix meeting.  Meeting representatives are from CED Advisory Board; organizers include K. Randall, AZ; Clair Bugan, TX; and Jay Innes.  This is a grass roots action - various people in states to adopt statements, legal rights.  National Agenda for the blind was taken all the way to White House/Senate and was endorsed by the Secretary.  Group will meet again in San Diego after CED Board meeting.  Donna notes that this could be used as an example of national change and one which is affected by our Catalyst grant.
