Conference call 12/14/00
Participants: Karen Dilka, Michelle Hoversten, Harold Johnson, Donna Mertens
Capacity Grant – Final Report - There is a bit of confusion on what, if anything, is to be submitted. Karen will contact Gary Rutkins this afternoon to clarify the matter; she is ready to send it in if need be.
AGBell – Harold reports his positive conversation with Donna Sorkin, Executive Director for AGBell. Donna is enthusiastic and AGBell has already accomplished many items. Donna wished to discuss possible topical discussion/Q&A groups; Donna only recalled cyber mentor Choice so Harold reiterated other options available. Karen noted that Donna possibly will be going to Phoenix in January for the National Agenda meeting; Karen looks forward to meeting Donna face to face.
On-line Workshops or Seminars – Discussed idea which had been distributed via e-mail; all thought a great idea. Karen: can we take some presentations from February ACE-DHH conference and put online for our preservice teachers? A: We can post presentations, still photos, streaming audio or video. Q: how can we get this going? How can we get someone to take the lead? Donna: how about captioning for our deaf? We can contact Gallaudet at 202 651-5771. We could do a side grant for captioning. We also should contact NTID. Idea: create technology kit which we send with someone to meeting with directions on how to do the technology, permission or authorization forms, etc. If one of our group isn’t going to a meeting or conference we could send a student to that meeting and pay them Choice monies; their task then is to capture the presentations, refine it and get it ready to put on the website. Plus the student’s work would be on the web and they are eligible to be chosen as one of the year’s “Top 100”. We will talk to Maher about what can be gathered and how. We will work on identifying step-by-step instructions on how to do this. Need to determine what needs to be purchased: digital camera? audio recording device?
National Agenda – Karen will fax us a copy of the National Agenda materials. Representatives from all our organizations will be there (January). Very small, exclusive group/meeting. They are proposing this to go up through Congress and want all programs to adopt. They modeled their draft Agenda after the National Agenda for the blind.
SITE Conference – Donna has asked for them to shift us to earlier than Friday. They replied they will consider but will wait until they see how many cancellations and confirmations, etc. Donna wishes to piggyback on her other travel to begin observing and interviewing faculty; Karen invited Donna to EKU on 3/17.
Summer meeting – we will plan Advisory Council meeting to coincide with NTID meeting; Advisory Council meeting on June 28 and CED Board meeting on June 29.
It is almost ready to go on-line. We should start using the calendaring system since we can see everything. A student has reviewed about two-thirds of our current website as to what should migrate over. It is being put into a spreadsheet so that the documents can be mass uploaded. Student is also going to cull through bulletins, web sites, etc. for conferences, etc. to put on the calendar. We will begin to contact people about posting. Should check with deaf administration Richard Fee about collaborating on job openings. We will need to push our faculty and students to register on the site. A listing of listservs will be placed on website with instructions on a person can be request to be added.
Idea: if organizations want to give membership discounts or other incentives to current students to become members we can support that on our website.
Idea: little videos from each of the organizations to be put on the web to introduce their organization. Also, teachers could take time during their classes to go online and click on the videos and get a “personal” introduction to the organization.
Listserv for ACE-DHH will be up and running soon. Karen to decide whether to keep the CED listserv.
Michelle to work closely with Debbie Haydon regarding grant public relations items.
