- Content course-work is conducted in child’s native language (i.e. Spanish)
- Serves to strengthen student’s home language (often the only language spoken by his or her parents)
- Exploits whatever language or cognitive development may have occurred prior to entering school
- Typically offered to recently arrived immigrant students while they become acclimated to U.S. educational system
- Very uncommon in public schools—Exercised more often by students attending private schools
