
St. Mary’s School for the Deaf (SMSD), a private day/residential school located in Buffalo, New York, has a history of 147 years of excellence in educating deaf children. The school’s primary financial support is from the State of New York. The staff has high expectations for gains in literacy for each of the 130 students. Responsibilities of the President:
The President is responsible for the operation and management
of all programs offered by the school in compliance with NYS Education
Department rules and regulations. Key areas include:
· Development and monitoring of academic and residential educational
programs
· Assembling highly competent staff and providing staff development
opportunities
· Representing the school to the business and professional communities
of Western New York
· Implementing and managing the SMSD Strategic Plan
· Preparation and management of the annual budget
· Securing financial assistance in support of the school’s endowment
· Advising the Board of Trustees on all school related matters
Qualifications:
· Master’s degree in deaf education or related field with coursework
in school administration
· At least 5 years of experience in administration and community
relations
· Eligibility for certification as an educational administrator
in New York State or willingness to obtain
· Ability (SCPI intermediate level with expectations to achieve
advanced level within two years) and desire to communicate and interact
successfully with deaf children and adults
· Experience in working with parents as partners in the educational
process
· State of the art knowledge of technology, integration options,
deafness and deaf culture
