Objectives:

 

1. Provide on-line academic support for dhh students through email cyber-pal interactions with a graduate student.

 

2. Provide contact opportunities and experiences for graduate students to interact with dhh students through on-line cyber-pal exchanges.

 

Procedures:

 

a.  Course instructor will solicit interest from teachers in facilitating a cyber-pal arrangement between the dhh students in their classes and the graduate students at CSUN.

 

b.  Course instructor will pair up graduate students with dhh students who have been identified by their classroom teachers.

 

c.  Course instructor will support graduate students in providing meaningful scaffolded exchanges with dhh students through email on a weekly basis.

 

d.  Classroom teachers will support the dhh students in comprehending the emails received from their cyber-pals, and in composing meaningful responses.

 

Technology Used:  Graduate students and dhh students will use email to conduct the cyber-pal exchanges.

 

Evaluation Strategies/POST DATA:

 

1.         Graduate students will keep a log which includes:

-           basic demographic information/descriptive information about their cyber-pal

-           dates of email exchanges.

 

2.         Graduate students will copy and turn in a hard-copy of the email exchanges.

 

3.         Graduate students will write a summary of the exchanges including:

            -           observations of the child’s writing skills

-           observations of any noted changes in the child’s writing skills

-           comments about the effectiveness of cyber-pal strategies in raising their

awareness of the written English skills of dhh students

 

4.         Classroom teachers will write a brief summary of their impressions of the cyber-pal process for the dhh students in their classroom.
